The countryside goes hand in hand with good food and drinks. Holidays in the countryside are supposed to provide not only an opportunity to return to nature and meet friendly people and animals; holidays in the countryside also have to smell and taste good. Where should you go if you want to have fresh cider, homemade wine, tasty sausages, delicious cheese, freshly baked bread and fine honey? Read our tips.

Culinary specialties from the countryside have dominated the world of gastronomy. Modern cooking has begun to use traditional ingredients and regional cuisine techniques. The situation in the Czech Republic is very similar and traditional specialties are becoming more and more popular. Traditional Czech cuisine involves all kinds of rural specialties based on local ingredients that are available throughout the year. These specialties are known for their simplicity and caloric value, which helped our ancestors to survive the hard physical work most of them did for a living. The two main elements of rural cuisine were soup and pulses. People in the country would typically eat meat only on holidays. An important element of local cooking was vegetables that were served with meat as a side dish together with bread, potatoes, millet grains, buckwheat and semolina porridge. As far as meat is concerned, techniques traditionally used in the countryside included smoking and sausage making.

Soups cooked in villages were thick and filling because very often soup would be the only warm meal during the day. Typical village soups were those using pulses and cabbage or sauerkraut in many variations that differed from region to region. Speaking of rural specialties, we cannot forget about the traditional pig-slaughtering. Did you know that there are more than 350,000 pig-slaughters in the Czech Republic every year?
Gourmets will certainly appreciate dairy products, especially different kinds of cheeses, curd and cottage cheeses and butter. We should also not forget about the many kinds of pastries, such as gingerbread from Pardubice and others, as well as very healthy honey. From honey, it is only one step to mead and from mead to beer and wine. The Czech countryside simply smells and tastes delicious. Cheers and bon appétit!
