Let’s go to a farm!

…but which one? Not all farms are the same.

Some specialize in growing and processing fruit. You can see not only the varieties you know from stores, but also true rarities – old and regional varieties. You can witness the process of making cider, drying fruit and making jams. Other places will show you how they grow vegetables and with some luck, you can arrange for a regular delivery of boxes with their produce. These also usually include herbs. In other farms, you can see flower plantations and find out that they are not only beautiful to look at, but that edible flowers can also be added into salads. You can also learn about natural gardening and permaculture and the difference between biodynamic, organic, integrated, and conventional farming. Some places will let you peek into the past and show you how grains were traditionally grown, including scything, threshing and grinding. After that, you will be able to sample some homemade bread. In other farms you might be able to admire historic farming machines.

A real farm would not be complete without livestock. In addition to common species, such as cows, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry and rabbits, you can also find places that keep pigeons, deer, fallow deer, mouflons, bores, foxes and ferrets. Don’t be surprised if you run into crocodiles, donkeys, lamas, yaks, buffalos, camels, ostriches and coypus. Try your hands at shepherding goats, making hay, milking a cow and making butter. Take advantage of being on a farm and sample homemade cheeses, curd cheese, yogurts, butter and meat specialties. You will not be disappointed if you want to buy fresh eggs and fish.
So let’s go to a farm and learn more about ….

  • Fruit and its varieties
No farm can offer such a wide selection of different fruit as a supermarket, but you can be sure that the fruit you will get is of the highest quality.
  • Fresh vegetables
Fresh vegetables from a farmer’s market are excellent – let alone vegetables directly from a farm!
  • Herbs
Herbs can be found in many places where they accompany vegetables. However, some farms specialize in growing herbs and spices.
  • Potatoes are worth more than gold
Long gone are the times when potatoes were grown everywhere and the Czech Republic was among the world’s potato powers. It is increasingly difficult to get good Czech potatoes.
  • Natural gardening
Some gardeners cannot do without chemicals and their gardens are far from being oases of health and life. Others, however, take a completely different approach and build natural gardens.
  • Organic farming, organic products and what it means
There are many forms of farming that place a greater emphasis on environmental protection than conventional farming.
  • Flowers both for your table and plate
Flowers are a symbol of beauty. You may not know that you do not have to put them just into a vase, but you can also put them on your plate.
  • From grains to a loaf of bread
Grains are the main component of our diet. It is difficult to imagine any meal without fresh baked bread, both salty and sweet baked goods, pasta and dumplings.
  • White and red wines
Sun-drenched hillsides with even rows of vines, a good-natured winemaker holding a wine taster in a wine cellar and a glass of fragrant great-tasting wine represent the ideal vacation in the countryside for many of us.
  • Like the old days
If you would like to know what farming used to involve, you can take a trip down memory lane.
  • Roaring deer
It is usually rather difficult to spot a deer, fallow deer and a mouflon in the wild. If you would like to take a close look at these majestic animals, visit one of the specialized farms.
  • Yaks, camels, ostriches, crocodiles…
Exotic animals are no longer kept only in zoological gardens. Some of them can also be seen at farms that specialize in their keeping.
The project is financed by the EU ́s Integrated Operational Programme - National Support for Tourism. The objective is to create a tourism product that will help entrepreneurs in rural areas and people who spend their holidays in the countryside.
