What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Šumava”?
Whispering wind in the treetops of aged trees? The Vydra River rushing over rocks or raindrops falling on peat bogs? You will most likely get swept away by the peace and quiet and feel a profound sense of eternity. Šumava is a place with undeniable genius loci ... The national park is an interesting destination for those who like majestic mountains, beautiful nature, deep forests and broad views that allow you to recover your body and mind. Šumava attracts visitors all year round. In summer, they go to the Železná Ruda area with its lakes, the Vydra River valley, Modrava, Kvilda, Borová Lada, Srní, the Boubín virgin forest and Lipno Reservoir. The most attractive winter destinations include the Železná Ruda and Modrava areas, Kvilda, Nová Huť, the Churáňov area and Kubova Huť. Since the military and frontier zone has been abolished, you can also visit an area with the remains of villages damaged during military exercises. If you want to experience peaceful Šumava, you can start in Dobrá Voda u Hartmanic. Or search for humility in the Jewish Museum of Dr. Šimon Adler, a local eminent glassworks owner and a rabbi who died in Auschwitz in 1944. To uplift your spirits, visit St. Gunther Church and to heal your body, drink water from a spring with ferruginous water that can be found right next to the church and after which the entire village was named. The region’s history can be best seen in castles and chateaux, such as in Horažďovice and Klenová. Engage in a debate about the tartness of Czech grapes with Charles IV’s butler, Bušek of Velhartice, in the gallery of his romantic Šumava castle in Velhartice. You can encounter Charles IV in Kašperk Castle, the central point of the Golden Path’s defense system and the Kašperské Hory’s richness; Kašperk was founded by Charles IV in 1356. If you enjoy admiring nature’s creativity, be sure to visit the Vltava River spring, glacial lakes and the Boubín virgin forest. You can also admire Šumava’s beauties from above, such as from the lookout tower on Poledník Hill or from the Lipno Treetop Walkway.

In the meantime, feel free to browse through facilities that offer accommodation and other services in the Šumava Mountains.
